Biography
Jia-Yu's artistic practice as performer and choreographer spans dance, choreography and performance art. She has been performing her own and in other people’s works for nearly 30 years.
A freelance dance practitioner based in London, Jia-Yu started her training in Peking Opera and ballet in Taiwan in the 80s. She went on to study contemporary dance in the US in 1989 and began her career performing, training, teaching and making in Taiwan, USA, Canada and UK. In the active decade of performing in the 90s, Jia-Yu, known as Chia-Yu Chang, performed with Harupin-Ha Butoh Dance Theatre, La Compagnie Marie Chouinard and Retina Dance Company. As a member of major dance companies (Jan Erkert, Bob Eisen, among many) in Chicago during this period, Jia-Yu received the Dance Achievement Award from Chicago Dance Coalition Award in 1995. She has received grants, bursaries and commissions to create original choreographies from institutions in the UK and Taiwan. Since gaining her MA in Choreography from London Contemporary Dance School in 2015, she has collaborated with composers, writers, philosophers and visual artist and performed in site-specifics and film and galleries, in addition to performing and making in conventional theatre venues. Since 2011 Jia-Yu has participated in theatre, gallery and film works by Tino Sehgal, Alex Baczynski-Jenkins, Alexandra Bachzetsis, Jerome Bel, Trajal Harrell, Anthea Hamilton, Jeremy Shaw, Pan Daijing. Due to Covid, her international tour engagements with work by Trajal Harrell, Jeremy Shaw and Alexandra Bachzetsis will be rescheduled to 2021-22 season. She has presented a full evening length work: Water Song for Dream Dangerous (in collaboration with Zadie Xa, Benito Mayor Vallejo and make up artist Ophelia Liu, 2020); Snakes (with Owen Ridley De-Monick, 2019); The Panel in 2014 at Chelsea Theatre, gallery based performances: Re: Remember The Dance and Found at The Hundred Years Gallery . A good motivator and passionate about sharing her experiences, Jia-Yu teaches technique, performance and choreography in a wide range of contexts including secondary, higher education dance majors, professional classes and the general public. |
