I am a performer and maker working in the intersection of dance, live art/performance art, theatre, and film. For me, the process of creating and presenting is an opportunity to absorb, exchange, collaborate, invent, reimagine, and transform memories and ideas into reality. It has enabled me to inhabit the territory that is constantly being pushed and pulled to incorporate personal history, environmental, social, and political issues, as well as genres and aesthetics, philosophical thinkings, and new dance forms.
As a performance artist, in this time of global crises, the ephemerality and impermanence of live performances have provided unexpected pleasure and a sense of wonder, bringing hope and joy to daily life. The disciplines required for the art form sharpen the mind to focus, surrender and remember. The performative presence establishes a vantage point from which one views reality with fresh perspectives in various parts of the body. Questions such as: ‘how could I sustain the heightened states of being?; who and what moves me?; when is what I desire not relevant?’ are intertwined with the worldwide political upheavals, the personal grief, the environmental disasters, the wars and genocides in various parts of the globe. Faced with these grand-scale issues, performance practices have equipped me with the unwavering agency and resilience to uphold our innate capacity for truth and beauty. I have found inspiration in movement-based work as a host, maker, and performer, and I am keen to create performances that give voice to those who are often unheard and unappreciated.
